GETTING STARTED WITH OWL CONNECT

Everything you need to know about setting up Owl Connect.

What is Owl Connect?

Owl Connect lets you wirelessly connect two Owl Labs devices in the same meeting space to enhance hybrid collaboration. You can pair two Meeting Owl Pros to increase video and audio pickup in larger spaces, or you can pair the Meeting Owl Pro with the Whiteboard Owl to switch seamlessly between discussion and brainstorming.

Setting Up Owl Connect

Follow the steps below to set up Owl Connect in your meeting space in either configuration.

  1. Decide which Meeting Owl Pro will be your Primary Owl.  This is the Owl that is connected to your host computer or Meeting HQ and will be positioned at the front of the room, closest to your display.  Connect this Meeting Owl to your computer.  Plug the power adapter into the Owl and an outlet. [recommend naming it xxxxx-Primary]

  2. Download or open the Meeting Owl App.

    1. If you have not set up your Owl before, go through the registration process.  It is very important to connect your Owl to WiFi and download the latest software version available, otherwise, Owl Connect may not work.

  3. Place the Secondary Owl 3-8 feet max (1-2.5m max) away from your Primary Owl, without any obstructions between them.  Plug the other power adapter into the Owl and an outlet.  This Owl will not be connected to a computer.

    1. Ensure the two Owls are placed level with each other and that their eyes are facing each other.  The camera lens on top of each Owl must be able to see the other Owl’s eyes to pair.

  4. Go back to the Meeting Owl App.

    1. If you have not set up your Owl before, go through the registration process for this Owl.  It is very important to connect your Owl to WiFi and download the latest software version available, otherwise, Owl Connect may not work. [Recommend naming it yyyyy-Secondary]

  5. From the “Nearby Owls” list, choose your Primary Owl.  Then, select “Owl Connect”.

  6. You can now choose the Owl to be your Secondary.

    1. The App will guide you through the rest of the setup process.

  7. In a meeting, you can confirm the Owls are properly paired and visible to one another when the singular Owl logo on the top right of your video feed is replaced by two bolded Owls.

NOTE:  If your Owls do not pair, ensure they are on the same software version.  (Learn how to update your device software here.)

Using Owl Connect

Here are our tips and best practices for using Owl Connect.

  1. Only the Primary Owl needs to connect to Wi-Fi once in order to initiate this feature, but connecting both is recommended in case you want to switch Owls at any point.

  2. Ensure there are no bright backlights or bright overhead lighting above either Owl. The camera lens on top of each Owl must be able to see the other Owl’s eyes in order to pair, and this could affect the visibility.

  3. Make sure your Meeting Owls are placed no further than 8 feet (2.5 meters) apart and are level at the same height.

  1. Your Whiteboard Owl does not need to be in view of the Meeting Owl Pro to properly pair, just in the same room or within 30 feet (9 meters).

  2. When you’re ready to switch between the view of active speakers and the view of the whiteboard, simply turn over a magnetic Whiteboard Tag. You’ll see an enhanced view of the whiteboard and a 360° Pano view of the in-room participants.
